from the Chosun Ilbo:
Suzanne Scholte, a conservative activist who has widely campaigned for human rights in North Korea, is running for a U.S. Congressional seat. She made the announcement in a meeting with Korean journalists in Virginia.
Scholte claimed she decided to run for Congress because she is concerned that the basic principles of freedom, democracy, and human rights that she had fought hard for overseas are being “undermined” in the U.S.
Scholte will run as a Republican to represent Virginia’s 11th district in the federal general elections in November. The district includes Annandale, which has a large Korean population.
She met the Korean journalists in a bid to woo Korean-American voters and position herself as an advocate of the community’s interests.
She expressed hope of working with congressmen of both parties who are interested in North Korean issues.
If she wins the GOP candidacy in May, Scholte will be running against incumbent Gerry Connolly, a Democrat, in November.
