Keep the Redskins Name! Tailgate Party

On Sunday, November 2—just two days before the election—Suzanne Scholte will host a “Keep the Redskins Name!” Tailgate Party at the Greene Turtle in Fairfax, Virginia.

Scholte, a globally recognized human rights advocate and GOP candidate for Congress in Virginia’s 11th district, said, “The attack on our beloved Redskins is not just another example of government intrusion but something even worse: another attempt to divide us against each other.  Anyone who lives in Northern Virginia knows how this team brings us all together—no matter your party, your profession, your religion, your ethnicity, your gender—this is the team we have always ‘hailed.’”

“I support the Redskins’ choice to keep our team name. I believe Northern Virginians share my view that we want our elected leaders to work to address the serious problems our nation is facing not use their positions of authority and the trademark office to intimidate our team.”

The Washington Post reported this year that Scholte’s incumbent opponent, Gerry Connolly, was not “willing to take a position” on whether or not the Redskins should lose their trademark.

“Unlike Gerry Connolly, I will take a position: The U.S. Congress and the federal government should leave the Redskins alone and not use the trademark office to intimidate our team,” Scholte continued. “I am pleased that Andre Billeaudeaux, author of How the Redskins Got Their Name, will be with me on Sunday to explain how this name is a respectful tribute to our Native American heritage.”

The event is open to the public and the press.
